Contract 1: Generalist Psychologist (Part-Time possibly leading to Full-Time)
Primary Clinical Training
Firefly Counselling is currently seeking a contract registered psychologist for adult general private practice - this includes feeling comfortable providing couples counselling. Preferences will be given to clinicians with training in (or willingness to actively seek training and supervision in) one or more of these therapeutic approaches:
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
- Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
- Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR)
- Motivational Interviewing
Skills in other research proven treatment approaches will be valued according to how they they further diversify the treatment approaches we currently offer.
Firefly Counselling is a recognized mental health service provider for First Nations Non-Insured Health Benefits / Residential Schools Programs. Preference will be given to applicants who can demonstrate experience working with First Nations populations. We also see a significant number of clients from the LGBTQ and Two-Spirit community. Comfort with these populations is essential.
While Firefly Counselling offers therapy for a wide range of mental health concerns, for our adult practice, we are particularly noted for our work on couples counselling, trauma, anxiety, stress and addictions. If you have an interest in these areas, or believe you have training or interest in a complimentary treatment area you may be a good match for this position.

Educational/Training Supports Offered by Firefly Counselling
Firefly Counselling will support the successful applicant to complete training in in our focus areas if they have not yet achieved certification.
Hours of Work
Work opportunities are a mix of day, evening and weekend work. Most clients have greater availability on evenings and weekends. Clinicians who are able to offer evening and/or weekend hours will have greater success at quickly building and replenishing their caseload.
Initial hours will be part-time. Depending on clinician availability and skill, there may be opportunity to build to a full-time practice.
Contract 2: Couples or Marriage Counsellor - Psychologist (Part-Time possibly leading to Full-Time)
Primary Clinical Training
Firefly Counselling is currently seeking a contract registered psychologist with a primary interest and training in Couples Counselling. Preference will be given to clinicians with training in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). A solid background in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is considered an asset.
Preference will also be given to a registered psychologist holding a Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy.

Additional Clinical Training
Opportunities to work with individual clients dealing with depression, anxiety, trauma, workplace stress, addictions, self-esteem, communication challenges, and whole family dynamics will be possible. Training in Motivational Interviewing, EMDR, Gestalt Therapy, Hypnosis, Hakomi Method, or other research proven therapy techniques will strengthen a clinician's application.

Hours of Work
Most couples are only available during evening and weekend hours. As a result, this position is open to a registered psychologist who have evening and/or weekend availability. This is an excellent opportunity for clinicians who may be working at another location (or who are otherwise committed) during daytime hours, and wish to add additional direct client work to their schedule.
While the initial hours offered are part-time, there is potential for a clinician to achieve full-time hours as their caseload builds over time. A full-time caseload would contain a mix of daytime and evening or weekend hours.
Applicant Requirements and Attributes
All applicants must be in good standing with the College of Alberta Psychologists as a Registered Psychologist. Firefly Counselling is seeking clinicians with two or more years of direct clinical practice experience. While these positions are for adult therapists only, Firefly Counselling has a thriving child practice component. As a result, all clinicians at Firefly must provide a clean Criminal Records Check - Vulnerable Sector, and Child Welfare Check that is current to three months prior to application, and every two years they are on contract. All therapists must carry individual professional liability insurance for at least $2 million.
Applicants selected for interviews will need to provide three references, with at least two references from clinicians who have observed them in clinical practice.
Contract 1 is for a generalist clinician, with knowledge that Firefly clients tend to primarily be couples, or individuals struggling with trauma, anxiety, stress and addictions. The ability to carry a generalist caseload for contract 1 is key.
Contract 2 is for a primarily couples therapist. There will be some generalist individual work as well. Applicants must feel confident in their ability to provide excellent service for clients in the clinic's primary focus areas.
All clinicians are expected to meet College of Alberta Psychologist standards for the obtaining of informed consent, note-taking, file maintenance and timely report writing as requested by third party payors. All clinicians at Firefly Counselling actively seek to strengthen and diversify their clinical skills through accredited training and supervision. If a clinician seeks to enter into a new area of clinical practice, referrals will only be provided in that area upon proof of appropriate training, and ongoing engagement in clinical supervision for that particular treatment approach or population.
While each clinician at Firefly Counselling is running their own contract based private practice, it is not uncommon to work co-operatively with other Firefly therapists based on client needs (e.g. specialist treatment with hypnotherapy or EMDR that the primary clinician cannot provide, or one clinician is providing individual therapy while another provides couples therapy for that client). This means that all Firefly clinicians must be able to work in both an individual and team based practice approach.
Excellent written and oral communication skills are required.
As we offer a state of the art online booking / invoicing / receipt system for our clients and clinicians to use, all our clinicians must be comfortable with basic computer operation skills. In order to meet third party payor reporting requirements, clinicians must also be competent at utilizing word-processing and spreadsheet programs (e.g. Word, Excel...).
As part of modelling healthy problem solving to our clients, all Firefly Clinicians are expected to take responsibility for their actions and decisions.
Firefly Counselling offers clients hours that work with the client's schedules. This means that all Firefly Clinicians work a range of hours, including evenings and weekends.

Firefly Counselling Expectations
Firefly Counselling provides therapeutic services to clients from all walks of life. We work with individuals from a variety of orientations, socio-economic statuses, secular / faith based, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. We expect our clinicians and clients to treat each other with respect and courtesy at all times.
Firefly Counselling has an onsite therapy dog. Some of our clients also bring therapy dogs with them to session.
Firefly Counselling Offers
Firefly Counselling provides client referrals, a fully furnished office, a state of the art booking and invoicing system (that you can also access offsite on your computer, phone or tablet), and all supplies. If there is some therapy equipment that you feel is important to your clinical practice (e.g. tappers), we are open to considering purchasing those for your use. Our established clinicians are also eligible for financial supports to attend accredited training and workshops in our clinic focus areas.
The core group of clinicians at Firefly Counselling each have 15+ years of clinical practice work in their various specialities. They can provide excellent resources for consultation, peer support, and continued learning. The ability to maintain a positive, supportive work environment is crucial for all our clinicians.
We have a diverse client base. Along with direct calls from the public, we also receive referrals from insurance companies, lawyers, physicians, Children Services, RCMP / Veterans Affairs Canada / Canadian Forces / First Nations (Non-Insured Health Benefits / Residential Schools Program), Alberta Paramedic's Association (APA), Edmonton Police Service (EPS), other agencies, and best compliment we can receive - referrals from current and prior clients.
Our compensation rate is consistent with industry standard for contract clinicians. Compensation is paid at least monthly, and may be more often for clinicians earning over a certain threshold.
